
József Finta passed away
Architect József Finta, who has been given the Kossuth, the Ybl Miklós, the Steindl Imre and Prima Primissima awards, and who was a regular member of HAA as well as of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, passed away aged 89 on 7 January.
Finta was an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects. He has been also given the Order of Merit of Hungary, Middle Cross, and the Gold Medal of the President of Hungary. Finta was most famous for his landmark hotels in Budapest, including the Duna Intercontinental, Forum, Novotel, Kempinski. He has also designed the Budapest Congress Centre. HAA regards the passing of József Finta as losing one of its own.
József Finta was born in 1935 in Kolozsvár. He earned his degree in 1958 at the Faculty of Architecture of the Budapest University of Technology. He began his career as an architect right after graduation at the Lakóterv Architectural Studio, working first as a designer, then as head of the Studio, and finally as chief architect and deputy director. His first success was the Garzon House in Dunaújváros, designed in 1961. He received the Ybl prize in 1965. He became a widely known architect in the country when he designed the Duna Intercontinental Hotel (1966-1969). In 1994 he established the Finta and Co. Architectural Studio with all of his colleagues at the Lakóterv Studio. The most important works of the Studio are the following: Police Palace, Westend City Center, Information Technology Building of Budapest University of Technology. József Finta was one of the most distinguished architects in Hungary an internationally renowned expert. He has designed biggest and most prestigious architectural projects in Hungary.
